Fanfiction, in My Portfolio?
writing, Art, editing, organization, worldbuilding, lore
Fanwork is taboo in indie circles. "Make your own things," we cry. But, during the pandemic a friend and I started writing fics to keep in touch. And then we wrote more. And more. We've learned the error of our ways! Fanfic is a wonderful playground where you don't overthink your choices, which means you can shake out ideas quickly and often. As a result we've improved our writing and art faster in 5 years than we had in nearly 10 in the indie comics scene.
We write multiple stories in a shared worldstate called "Pomegranny Farm." Our stories are intentionally wholesome and NPC-forward. Most, but not all, of the characters are the Diverse Stardew Valley variants, which is a fanmade mod to bring diversity of race, ability, and gender into a setting that's severely lacking. To keep track of our edits, lore we add, and story beats, we maintain a detailed spreadsheet.
Praise for Operation Marnie:
"For as much as a delightful shitpost as this story is, you don't shy away from the heavier topics and it's all been treated with dignity and respect."
"it's such a perfect mixture of fun, laughs (oh boy you get my sense of humor), feelings, serious talks and cute moments. Literally perfect I love it, thank you for writing it!! So silly and so awesome..."
"You two sure know how to hit 'em. But you do it with care and that's important too. This fic- with all of its happy shitpost laughs, and heartwarming hearteyes and yeah, gut punches like this- is a balm of bay leaves and a bundle of sage."
